What is cost per lead?

CPL measures the average advertising cost required to generate a lead. The definition of a lead needs to be consistent: a form fill, qualified enquiry, booked demo and marketing-qualified lead can represent very different levels of value.

Formula

CPL = Advertising spend ÷ Leads

Worked example

If a campaign spends £6,000 and generates 300 leads, CPL is £20. If only some of those leads become customers, the next question is how lead quality and lead-to-sale conversion affect customer acquisition cost.

How to use CPL

CPL is most useful as one stage in a funnel. When it changes, check whether the movement comes from media costs, click-to-lead conversion, targeting or lead criteria. A low CPL is not automatically desirable if lead quality falls at the same time.

Need the wider picture?

Connect CPL with click-to-lead rate, lead-to-sale rate, CPA and ROAS when you need to understand lead quality as well as lead cost.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a lead?

That depends on your business and measurement setup. Define the event clearly and keep it consistent before comparing CPL between campaigns or periods.

Is CPL the same as CAC?

No. CPL is the advertising cost per lead. CAC concerns the cost of acquiring an actual customer and can include broader acquisition costs.
