Thanksgiving in Marketing
Strategies for Success
If you’re marketing products or services in the United States, Thanksgiving presents a golden opportunity. This beloved holiday, centred around family, gratitude, and tradition, offers unique ways to connect with audiences on a cultural, emotional, and commercial level.
Last year I published an episode of the Marketing Made Clear Podcast called “What is Thanksgiving?” which delved into the history of thanksgiving as well as
Here are some practical strategies to help you make the most of Thanksgiving in your marketing campaigns.
The Marketing Made Clear Podcast
This article features content from the Marketing Made Clear podcast. You can listen along to this episode on Spotify:
1. Emphasise Family, Gratitude, and Togetherness
Thanksgiving is synonymous with warmth, family gatherings, and heartfelt gratitude. Campaigns that evoke these sentiments are likely to resonate deeply with consumers.
How to Capture the Spirit of Thanksgiving:
- Content Marketing: Share touching stories, customer testimonials, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of employees celebrating Thanksgiving. Show how your products or services enhance the holiday experience, whether it’s a recipe, home decor, or a heartfelt gift.
- User-Generated Content (UGC): Encourage customers to share their Thanksgiving moments featuring your brand, using a branded hashtag. Think food prep with your cookware or festive family setups using your decor items.
- Charitable Campaigns: Partner with charities or organise food drives to reflect the spirit of giving. Donating a portion of sales to help those in need not only enhances your brand image but also fosters goodwill.
2. Holiday-Themed Promotions
Thanksgiving ushers in the busiest shopping weekend of the year. Leverage this timing by offering irresistible holiday-themed deals.
Promotional Ideas for Thanksgiving:
- Pre-Black Friday Sales: Launch early discounts or bundle deals in the lead-up to Black Friday. Use Thanksgiving as a soft entry point to create urgency.
- Exclusive Thanksgiving Offers: Highlight limited-time discounts on Thanksgiving-related products; cookware, food items, or home goods. Everyone loves a foodie-focused promotion!
- Loyalty Rewards: Show gratitude to your loyal customers with special Thanksgiving perks, such as discounts, free shipping, or bonus points in loyalty programs.

3. Create Thanksgiving-Specific Products
Tailoring your products to Thanksgiving themes can give your brand a unique edge.
Ideas for Special Thanksgiving Products:
- Limited-Edition Items: Offer Thanksgiving-themed versions of popular products, such as festive packaging, seasonal colours, or flavours (pumpkin spice, cranberry, or turkey-inspired treats). Limited-edition products add urgency and exclusivity to your offerings.
- Thanksgiving Meal Kits: If you’re in the food industry, pre-portioned meal kits with easy-to-follow recipes are a game-changer for busy families preparing Thanksgiving feasts.
4. Focus on Health and Wellness
As much as Thanksgiving celebrates indulgence, it also opens the door for brands promoting health-conscious choices.
Position Your Brand as the Voice of Balance:
- Healthier Options: Promote low-calorie desserts, plant-based meals, or portion-control tips for Thanksgiving feasts.
- Fitness Offers: If you’re in the fitness industry, offer discounts on equipment or programmes as part of a “stay active this holiday” campaign.

5. Tell a Story That Sticks
Thanksgiving is a reflective, sentimental time. Use storytelling in your advertising to make an emotional connection.
How to Craft Heartfelt Thanksgiving Campaigns:
- TV & Digital Ads: Create ads centred around themes like family, gratitude, and connection. A compelling story will leave a lasting impression, helping your brand remain memorable long after the holiday.
Beyond the USA: Thanksgiving Worldwide
While Thanksgiving is most associated with the USA, it’s also celebrated in various forms across the globe. Here are some examples:
- Canada: Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Plan campaigns early to capture Canadian audiences.
- Netherlands: The Dutch observe Dankdag, commemorating the perseverance of Pilgrims who lived in Leiden before their journey to America.
- Brazil: Known as Dia de Ação de Graças, the celebration includes parades, church services, and carnivals.
- Germany, Austria, Switzerland: A form of Thanksgiving involves parades, music, and church services.
Other countries with Thanksgiving traditions include Saint Lucia, Liberia, the Philippines, Norfolk Island, Japan, Mexico, Ghana, Rwanda, and Poland.
Be mindful of regional differences. While Thanksgiving campaigns can work wonders in North America, a full-blown American-style approach might not translate well in other regions without research and adaptation.
A Word of Caution: Thanksgiving in The UK and Australia
In markets like the UK or Australia, Thanksgiving campaigns might come off as overly American and irrelevant. Instead, consider focusing on more universally relatable holidays like Christmas or New Year.
By crafting campaigns that tug at the heartstrings, offer real value, and align with the holiday spirit, you can make the most of Thanksgiving’s potential. Done right, your brand won’t just be part of the holiday buzz, it’ll leave a lasting impression.
