What is cost per click?

CPC tells you how much advertising spend was required, on average, to generate one click. It is a cost-efficiency metric rather than a profitability metric: a low CPC can be useful, but only if the traffic it buys is relevant and goes on to produce valuable outcomes.

Formula

CPC = Advertising spend ÷ Clicks

Worked example

If you spend £5,000 and generate 10,000 clicks, average CPC is £0.50. Differences in audience quality, intent, placement and conversion behaviour matter when comparing campaigns.

How to use CPC

CPC is especially useful when diagnosing why acquisition costs changed. If CPA rises, the cause might be more expensive clicks, a weaker conversion rate, or both. Looking at CPC alongside CTR and conversion rate helps separate media-cost changes from funnel changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a low CPC good?

Only when the clicks are useful. Cheap traffic that rarely converts can be less valuable than more expensive traffic with stronger commercial intent.

Why can CPC change?

Competition, audience, bid strategy, placement, creative and platform auction conditions can all influence CPC.
